Launching Your Money Making Hobby Business In 5 Easy Steps

Now, more than ever is a good time to turn your passion into a money making hobby business. Profitable hobbies such as photography, painting, scrapbooking and arts and crafts can be turned into a thriving business or a nice part time income. The trick is to determine if your favorite hobby has this potential.

Most hobbies can be utilized to create and sell tangible items, provide a service or to share knowledge via teaching or coaching. There are such a large array of creative and fun activities that also have profit potential that it’s not all that hard for a specific individual to find one suited to his or her interests and talents. These hobbies can be used either to make a small second income or even turned into a full time business. Here are the steps to launching that money making hobby career that you’ve been dreaming of.

Step #1: Find a money making hobby with decent profit potential

If you already have a hobby, you can probably use it to make money. However, you either need to determine its actual marketability and profit potential, or, if you don’t already have any money making hobby in mind, find one that offers these financial attributes. Check out a variety of information sources on the hobbies you’re considering in order to get a sense of how much competition there is, overall market demand, and the approaches taken by others in making the hobby business work. Then choose one to try out.

Step #2: Write out a business plan for the money making hobby business

Once you’ve found a money making hobby that looks like it has promise, the next step is to create a business plan. This may be either an informal set of notes and a few figures, or a formal business prospectus, it’s up to you. The key points to focus on in the business plan are: potential gross revenues on some time basis (i.e. monthly, quarterly, or yearly), expenses (start up costs, overhead, supplies, general living expenses, insurance costs if any, taxes), any financing or borrowing you may need to cover the costs in the beginning, the amount of hours daily of work you will have to put into the hobby activity, the marketing strategy you will implement, and finally the profit potential after all the expenses are taken care of.

Step #3: Set up shop doing the money making hobby

The next step is to put the plan for the money making hobby into action. If the hobby you have chosen is one that you’re already involved in, the start up costs in terms of equipment and supplies may be minimal, and work or office space may already be fairly well set up. But either way, get the general business space, equipment, and materials into functional action taking into account all of the factors identified in your business plan.

Step #4: Advertise your money making hobby

Once you’re ready to do business, you need customers. The advertising channels open these days are many – internet message boards and classified ad sites, web sites, article marketing, classified ads in newspapers, signs, flyers on billboards, even You tube or television ads. If the demand is there, these methods will begin bringing customers to your hobby business. When they come, do your thing and watch the money begin to come in. The beginning of a business is often an exciting time so enjoy it.

Step #5: Evaluate the success of your money making hobby goals and make changes if necessary

Especially in the beginning, evaluate the success of your efforts fairly soon after start up – say within a few months. Have you achieved the goals set out in your business plan? Is it more or less work than you thought? Is demand what you thought? Might there be some way to optimize what you’re doing? These are the types of questions to ask. The answers will show you if changes need to be made or if you’re running the most tight and effective ship possible. Make changes where necessary, continue in business, and then make another evaluation some time later. This process will streamline your business over time and insure it evolves and grows.

Going from just enjoying your hobby to a money making hobby venture is a wonderful opportunity to show your creative side while earning some extra money. People enjoy what they are good at, and thus tend to be successful at it. And nowhere is this better seen than in starting your own hobby business. So take your talents, interests, and enjoyment seriously and go for it!
